Even the best plant parents slip up. Here are the most common pitfalls — and how to avoid them.
Watering too often is the fastest way to suffocate roots.
Signs: Yellowing leaves, soggy soil, fungus gnats, root rot smell
Fix: Always do a finger check before watering — 1–2 inches deep should feel dry, not damp.
Remember: roots need oxygen, not just water.
Putting a light-loving plant in a dark corner = leggy stems, small leaves, and zero vibe.
Fix: Know your plant’s light needs.
Use the “Book Test”: If you can’t read a page comfortably during the day — it’s probably too dark.
Using dense garden soil or skipping drainage = poor aeration, trapped water, and unhealthy roots.
Fix: Use a loose, airy mix based on your plant’s needs. Always choose pots with drainage holes.
More nutrients ≠faster growth. Overfeeding leads to salt buildup, leaf burn, or even root damage.
Fix: Fertilize only during active growth (spring/summer), and always dilute more than the bottle says unless you're sure.
Tropical plants love humidity — but most homes are too dry.
Fix: Use a humidifier, group plants together, and avoid cold drafts. Keep temps steady (65–85°F is the sweet spot for most).
Plants don’t like drama. Constantly rotating locations can shock them or cause dropped leaves.
Fix: Find a good spot and stick with it. If you need to move them, do it gradually.
If roots are growing out of the pot or the soil dries too fast — it’s time for a new home.
Fix: Repot every 12–18 months or when root-bound. Go up 1–2 inches in pot size — not more.
Wilting, spotting, or pests rarely fix themselves.
Fix: Take action early. Remove dead leaves, isolate infected plants, and adjust care quickly. Most issues are fixable if caught fast.
